Through two interlaced and parallel clues,this paper shows the complex thinking projected by Japanese colonists and Taiwan intellectuals before the Taiwanese vernacular movement,with a view to exploring and combing the "internal" driving force of the beginning of the Taiwanese vernacular,and re-examining the origin of the Taiwanese vernacular in 1920's.In straightening out the thinking vein of the colonists,on the one hand,this paper examines the process of how "Mandarin" establishes the orthodoxy of "assimilation" means in colonial Taiwan,and at the same time focuses on the differences of "Mandarin" educational concepts within Japanese colonists and the process of their flow and change,as well as the sequence in which these concepts appear and the process in which they collide with each other.This paper combs synchronicity and diachronicity in order to understand and fully grasp the thinking circuit and dynamic change process of the colonists on the eve of the occurrence of Taiwanese vernacular.It is through the investigation of the "change" side of its thinking circuit that we can draw a clearer picture of the interaction process of "benign" or "vicious" interaction between the colonizer and the colonized.In the context of the colonized party,this paper intentionally uses the concept of "Han nationality consciousness" to bond the "Chinese consciousness" and "Taiwan consciousness" which often appear in the research of Taiwanese scholars after the rise of the trend of "rewriting the history of Taiwanese literature",trying to clarify the vernacular literary movement in Taiwan from the perspective of "assimilating modernization" and "completing the Han nationality consciousness".Before the movement,Taiwan's "traditional literati" and Taiwan intellectuals who advocated Taiwan's vernacular/new literary movement had "continuity" in their thinking on language appeal.At the same time,by sorting out the core controversial articles advocating Taiwan's vernacular,while paying attention to "continuity",they did not forget the "difference" and "complexity" of their thinking.As opposed to focusing on the "change" aspect of the colonizers,this paper is more concerned about the "unchanged" parts of the reflections projected on the language issues in the study of the colonized.Through this discussion of "continuity",this paper intends not to be confined to the traditional research paradigm that emphasizes the tremendous influence and impetus of the May 4th New Literature/Vernacular Movement on theoccurrence of vernacular Chinese in Taiwan,but also to fully embrace the cultural separatist trend of thought of "indigenous theory" / "cultural independence" in Taiwan's academic circles.Vigilance.Under the discussion of the two clues of "change" and "invariability",the internal space of the research topic of "the occurrence of Taiwanese vernacular literature" has been reopened,and its complexity has gradually revealed.At the same time,when the "two clues" are described as "a story",a new possibility of "rewriting the history of Taiwanese literature" beyond the value judgment based on ideological opposition emerges,which makes it possible to re-examine the "occurrence of Taiwanese vernacular literature in 1920s".
