| Since the Reform and Opening-up,contemporary China has undergone a transformation from an agricultural, traditional, closed society to an industrial, modern, open society, people’s way of life, action patterns and value systems have changed.Social reality is complex and changeable. In this context, intellectuals continue to pay attention to the social transformation of contemporary China with their sense of social mission.Cao Zhenglu is one of them.Because his novels "There" and "Ask the Sky" respectively describe the underlying fate of the two groups of laid-off workers and migrant workers, who are oppressed and deceived,Cao Zhenglu is called "bottom writer" by literary critics. But in fact, whether it is "There" or "Ask the Sky",their commonality is not only to pay attention to the "bottom layer",but also to link the fate of the characters with the issue of grand social transformation. This is also the common concern of Cao Zhenglu’s overall creation.Taking the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone as the dividing line in the early 1990 s,the social transformation presented in Cao Zhenglu’s works is divided into two periods. Before the 1990 s,the Reform rose, but people’s ideas have not yet fully developed”,which made the characters in the novel created the confusion of "modern people".Since the 1990 s,the market economic system has been gradually established and improved.Rural population continues to enter the city. And the actions of members of society have begun to be dominated by economic interests.Cao Zhenglu observes the main characteristics of Chinese social transformation from the perspective of intellectuals, and considers the society in transition in his creation. The writing of this paper attempts to break through the limitations of the "bottom narrative" and returns to Cao Zhenglu’s creative path to examine how Cao Zhenglu, who was enshrined in the transformation of society, created it.However, rethinking the "bottom narrative" is not to cut it with the "social transformation narrative",but to dialogue with it and find out a larger vision and care of "social transformation narrative",and also to find out the inadequacies of the "social transformation narrative".The introduction is to re-consider Cao Zhenglu’s works as a problem consciousness,to explore the double restriction of "underlying narrative" to understand the formation of Cao Zhenglu, and to link his works with the issue of social transformation. The first chapter is based on the "social transformation" consciousness, which surrounds Cao Zhenglu’s narrative of the Chinese society in the transition period, highlighting his conscious concern about the repressed characters and fields in society, thus emphasizing his intellectual feelings. The second chapter draws the focus from the group of other identities to the group of intellectuals where Cao Zhenglu is located. We can find that he not only reveals the hidden characters and "problems" when he creates, but also counters himself and makes solutions to his own confusion. And this kind of attempt is mainly to deal with the real dilemma of intellectuals’ marginalization. The third chapter analyzes the narrative dilemma he faces that based on the specific interpretation of Cao Zhenglu’s works. The main manifestation is that his proposed solution to social problems is imaginative, and it is easy to fall into the humanitarian narrative trap when using individual survival dilemmas and spiritual crisis to replace the overall social problems. |
