Dao'an's Achievements In Buddhist Philology

Dao'an(312-385 A.D.)was an influential and inspiring propagator and organizer of Buddhism in the Jin Dynasty.He was also a pioneer and practitioner of the development of Buddhist philology.Dao'an has made great contributions to the development of Buddhism in China and played an important role in connecting the past with the future in promoting Buddhism in China.As an epoch-making scholar in the history of Chinese Buddhism,Dao'an is particularly prominent in Buddhist philology.This paper collects Dao'an's existing works and related documents,especially in Buddhist philology.Based on this,it analyses Dao'an's contribution in this respect,and explores the important value of Dao'an's achievements in Buddhist philology for philology and Buddhist research.The first chapter of this article first introduces Dao An's works.According to the achievements of predecessors,there are about 25 kinds of existing meridian orders and annotations.Among them,the catalogue of Buddhist scriptures compiled by Dao An is one of the most important achievements in Buddhist philology.It provides an important clue for us to systematically clarify the existence,author,translator and age of Buddhist classics in the Han,Wei and Jin Dynasties.It provides a basis for the study of the style of Buddhist scriptures catalogue,and retains a large number of Buddhist literature materials.To annotate many Buddhist scriptures and create a method of dividing the Scriptures into sections,which provides a demonstration significance for later generations of scriptures annotation.Although most of Dao'an's annotations have been lost,they still provide new ideas and methods for later scholars in the annotation of Confucian classics.Chapter two discusses how Dao An understood and developed Geyi,a way of understanding and presenting Buddhist scriptures.Dao'an objectively and reasonably realized the value and shortcomings of "Geyi".Although Dao'an did not really break away from the shackles of "Geyi",the development of Dao'an's prefaces makes the way of understanding Buddhist scriptures more mature and profound,and opens the atmosphere of "Six Families and Seven Sects" to understand Buddhism in order to promote the spread and prosperity of Buddhism in China.Chapter three discusses Dao An's achievements in the translation of Buddhist scriptures.This part is divided into two stages.In the first stage,Dao An studied and evaluated the translation of the old Buddhist scriptures in light of his own practical work in the study of the Buddhist scriptures.In this aspect,the focus of the discussion is on the translation of the same version of Dao An and its evaluation of the translated scriptures by An Shigao.It can be seen that there was no obvious bias between literal translation and free translation during this period,but a compromise approach was adopted to complement each other.Understanding.In the second stage,Dao An presided over and directed the actual translation of Buddhist scriptures.At that time,Dao An's status changed from a Buddhist researcher to a translator.In the process of guiding the translation of Buddhist scriptures,literal translation was the main method.Based on practice,the principles of translation were summarized as "Five Losses of the original,Three Difficulties",which provided theoretical guidance for the translation of Buddhist scriptures,and also provided the understanding of foreign Buddhism for current and future scholars.Provides the basis.Dao'an's contribution to Buddhist philology marks the end of the stage of emphasizing Buddhist scripture translation while ignoring the understanding of Buddhist Scripture thoughts,and the beginning of a new stage of Buddhist sinicization.Through the study of Dao'an Buddhist philology,we can not only get a glimpse of the basic features of the Sinicization of Buddhism in the Jin Dynasty,but also have a certain reference significance for the study of the development and evolution of Buddhist philology.
