Unity Of Multiple Contradictions

Pan Yuliang is one of the most important female artists in the art history of 20th-century China.In his book Art and Artists of Twentieth-Century China,Michael Sullivan,a famous British art historian,wrote that Pan Yuliang is an outstanding example of a few Chinese painters who can integrated Chinese art with Western art.From Pan Yuliang's works,you can see that she had harmoniously integrated various contradictory elements in her work,for example,the contrast between realistic and freehand style,the integration of Chinese elements in Western painting and the emotional interweaving of her loneliness and the works“Pleasant Temperament ” and “Cool and Free”,these contradictions had been harmoniously integrated into a paint by the painter with skillful techniques,reflecting the change of Pan's inner side.From this perspective,this paper will make a new interpretation of Pan Yuliang and her works through researches on the contradictory features and reasons existing in her paintings.This paper is divided into four chapters.In the first chapter,it will discuss the contradictory characteristics in artistic creation,and interpret them from the multiple contradictory factors in artists' creation and the reflection in their works,in an attempt to prove that the contradictory characteristics in artistic creation is an objective existence and then,it will lead to the following topic.The second chapter is the key part of the paper.It mainly focuses on Pan Yuliang's "mother and son" series works,figure paintings and body paintings.Through the analysis on them,it explains the objective existence of multi contradictory factors in Pan's paintings and their harmonious integration from objectiveness and subjectivity.Chapter three analyses the cause behind the multi contradictory factors in Pan's works,aiming at analyzing three aspects from an objective perspective,the social environment full of the exchange and collision of various foreign and local thoughts,the artist's inferiority complex and transcendence,and the awakening of her female consciousness.It points out the influence to Pan's inner side.The fourth chapter focuses on the inspiration and significance of Pan's artistic style to contemporary art.Through comprehending and analyzing Pan Yuliang's relevant materials and information,the paper conducts an in-depth analysis on the contradictions and conflicts between Pan Yuliang's wishes and the real situation reflected in her works,in order to present a new perspective for Pan Yuliang's relevant researches.
