The National English Curriculum for Compulsory Education(2011versions)points out that the basic English teaching of the primary schools is to cultivate students understanding of pictures and words,which is the requirements for sixth graders.Students are required to guess the story's universal meaning through simple words and pictures.Therefore,we know that teachers should pay greater attention to improving students' English reading ability at primary schools.However,English teachers often spend the most time and effort in explaining new words,and sentence-making drills in English reading teaching.The teachers emphasize on language forms and ignore the students' understanding of the content so much that it has influenced their overall understanding of the author's ideas and made their reading ability decline instead of rising.This research mainly employs the theory of input hypothesis,cognitive theory and schema theory.Through the research and practice of picture books in primary school English reading teaching,this paper is hoping to promote students' interest in reading and develop their reading skills.The 60 students in grade 6 from Xin Kaidi Primary School,Ke Qi are selected as the research objects.They are divided into experimental class and control class.In the course of eighteen-week experimental study,the author collects the data through the pre-test and post-test,students' questionnaires and uses SPSS 22.0 data statistics software and chart to analyze the data.The average reading comprehension scores of the experiment class is 14.97.However,the average reading comprehension scores of the control class is 12.52.The results are valid.Then the following conclusions are drawn: First,the English picture book is consistent with the cognitive characteristics of students in primary school,which is used in the teaching of English reading and can effectively stimulate students' reading interest and acting ability.Second,in the teaching of English reading,the reading materials should be appropriate to the current language level of students in primary school.However,English picture books play the best role to improve students' reading performance.In the end,the author puts forward some prospects and suggestions related to the picture books in the teaching of reading.
