The National English Curriculum for Compulsory Education(2011 version)points out that the English teaching of the primary schools should cultivate students' understanding of short stories and passages.Students are required to understand the story's general meaning correctly and develop a good reading habit.So,we know that teachers should pay more attention to cultivate students' English reading ability at primary schools.However,the problems such as lacking of proper English reading materials have not been solved,which have affected students' English reading ability to a certain extent.In addition,all the students start to learn English at the third grade in primary schools.And the early English learning is still a new and interesting thing for students.However,with the deepening of learning,students lose their interest gradually.In recent years,the picture book reading is used widely in China and gets good results.Therefore,this study,based on cognitive development theory,the input Hypothesis,and intuitive teaching theory,applied the picture books to English reading and explored the influence of picture books on English reading interest and ability of the primary school students.A twenty-week teaching experiment was done by the author.The subjects of this study were 100 students in Class 1 and Class 3 in Grade 6 from the first Primary School of Xigu.Class 1 is the experimental class and Class 3 is the control class.The experimental class mainly used English textbook and English picture books as auxiliary teaching materials;the control class just used the English textbook.The main research methods of this experiment were interviews,questionnaires and tests.And by using these methods,the paper studied whether English picture books can stimulate pupils' reading interest and whether English picture books can improve pupils' English reading ability.After the experiment,the author analyzed the results by SPSS system,and the results show that English picture books can not only arouse the students' interest in English reading,but also improve their English reading ability.
