A Report On E-C Translation Of The Queen Mother (Chapter Fifteen)

With the development of globalization,people's enthusiasm for famous historical figures of other countries has increased,and a large number of foreign biographical works have been introduced into China,which has enabled many Chinese readers to have a further understanding of the history and culture of other countries.Meanwhile,it is also a good opportunity for translators and researchers engaging in the translation of biographical literature to strengthen international culture exchanges.The source text selected in this translation report is the 15 th chapter of The Queen Mother,written by the British biographer William Shawcross,in which depicts how George VI and the Queen soothed the British people and developed British international relations during the postwar British recession.The content of the book,based on real facts,is objective and true,reflecting the historicity of biographical literature.Besides,a large number of direct quotations in this chapter are no lack of vivid oral expression and long sentences are exquisite in structures,revealing the literariness of biography.Because of these two characteristics,Lin Yutang's translation principle of Faithfulness,Smoothness and Beautifulness is adopted as the theoretical framework,combined with the translation problems encountered in this translation project.A discussion of the applicability of the principles to biographical translation has been made based on three translation principles.It is hoped that the practical experience of this translation will be used for reference in the study of E-C translation of biographies by students of the same level,and the translated text is hoped to provide relevant information for the domestic study of British royal Life and political history after World War ?.
