The Translation Of The Academic Text From The Perspective Of Transaltion Units

The origin of culture and language has been a focus of research among linguists,sociobiologists,and some anthropologists.In his book The Emergence of Culture,Philip G.Chase,a professor at University of Pennsylvania,from the perspectives of archaeology and ethological studies,tracing back to the causes of the creation of human language,explores how an elaborated culture is influenced and motivated by language through analyzing the role that socially constructed coding plays in the development of culture and language.His findings are instructive to some extent to the related research in China.Taking Chapters Three and Four in the book as the example,this paper discusses the specific problems and their solutions in the process of academic text translation,including the translation of proper names,professional terms,polysemants and long sentences,under the guidance of the translation unit theory.The translation methods are discussed through these cases,that is,source information is classified into different translation units in accordance with their roles in the source text,and relevant translation strategies are adopted to find their equivalents,for instance,cutting,reversing,splitting-up and recasting are employed in the translation of sentences as translation unit,to ensure the accuracy and logical rationality of the information,and the acceptability of the translation.
