This is an English-Chinese translation report, which is based on the translation of Monasteries and Culture Change in Inner Mongolia(Chapters 4-5).This book mainly talks about the development of Lamaism in Inner Mongolia. It is an informative text. The author describes the physical aspects and internal organization of the monasteries in Inner Mongolia in Chapter 4 and Chapter 5 respectively.During the process of translation, for the differences between English and Chinese and for lack of knowledge about Lamaism, the translator meets plenty of difficulties. Therefore, the focus of this report is on the discussions of the difficulties met in the translation and the corresponding methods, which are put in Chapter 3 and Chapter 4respectively.The difficulties are divided into lexical ones and syntactic ones. The former contains the difficulties in dealing with proper nouns, polysemous words and parts of speech, and their corresponding methods are transliteration and annotation, choice of word meaning and conversion of parts of speech. The syntactic difficulties mainly exist in translating long sentences and the passive sentences. To cope with these two kinds of sentences, the translator adopts translation in original order and division, and conversion of voice respectively. The translation of the source text will provide readers an opportunity to broaden their horizons and deepen their understanding of Lamaism in Inner Mongolia. From the translation, the translator has also accumulated a lot of valuable first-hand experience and rethought profoundly the improvements made to avoid the similar limitations in the future.
