This is a report on the translation of Mongolian Shamanism(Chapter 5-8)which introduces the universe and its continents, land and water spirits, the blue heaven and heaven's lord in Mongolian Shamanism.Written by Purev.Otgony,Mongolian Shamanism is a text about religion.By translating this source text, the translator aims to find out the difficulties in translating texts about religions and come up with the corresponding solutions so as to provide reference for the translation of similar texts. The translator has met three main difficulties in translating the text, namely, the proper nouns, the long sentences and the invocations.Firstly, there are many proper nouns like names of mongolian people, places, spirits and some Shamanist terms. They are Mongolian transliterations whose Chinese equivalents are difficult to find.Secondly,as an English text,it has many typical English sentences with long attributives and complex structures. To make them conform to the Chinese expression is another problem.Thirdly, the invocations sung by shamans have their own form and rhyme, which are also very hard to deal with.Taken the connotations of the religious words, the rhyme of the invocations and the language style of the whole text into consideration, the translator mainly adopts five translation methods in dealing with the three difficulties. In terms of the proper nouns, transliteration and annotation are adopted to make sure that the connotations of the words are reserved. The long sentences are translated in two ways. One is following the original order and the other is reinventing the sentence sutructure. As for the invocations, rhyme is applied to maintain the form and rhyme of the original text.On the one hand, translating the text can improve the target readers' understanding of Mongolian Shamanism. On the other hand,by translating this source text, the translator finds out the difficulties in translating texts about religions and come up with the corresponding solutions, which provides reference for the translation of similar texts.
