The thesis is a translation report. The text translated is the “most prolific and most prestigious”Australian writer Tim Winton's best-selling novel Breath. In this report, the translator translates the fourth chapter.Breath is Winton's twentieth work. The story of the novel takes place in the 1970 s,with the narrator,Bruce Pike,a divorced middle-aged rescuer.Pike recalled his youth friendship and adventure with his companion Wayne Rooney in flashbacks who have just entered adolescence, love adventurous and exciting behaviors. They challenge each other for how long they hold their breath underwater, and they long to surf in the vast ocean. When the two wild people met Sando,an old adventurer and master of almost religious devotion to surfing, their pursuit of extreme surfing was greatly improved.Under Sando's guidance, surfing skills and courage of the two reached a new level. In a word, they have met with a lot of thrilling and exciting things, and in the journey they have also gained growth, which will have a lasting and far-reaching impact on their lives.Through the translation of Chapter 4 of the text, the translator wrote this translation practice report. This translation practice report will briefly introduce the author and main content of this translation text, explain the translator's translation process of the text, analyze the difficulties encountered by the translator in the translation process, and put forward the translation strategies adopted by the translator.Difficulties in translation are mainly in two levels, the lexical level and the syntactic level. The lexical level includes the translation of choice of meaning, the judgement of part of speech and culture-loaded words. In the syntactic level, the translator will mainly analyze the difficulties in passive sentences, attributive clauses, adverbial clauses and complex sentences. Then, some solutions and strategies in accordance with these translation difficulties will be put forward and the translator will analyze these strategies by combining detailed examples in the translation text.At the lexical level, when a word with multiple meanings is encountered, the translator select the appropriate meaning according to the context, and if there is no appropriate corresponding word in Chinese,I also need to extend the lexical meaning. Some wordshave many kinds of parts of speech,so in order to conform to the Chinese expression habits,I usually need to change parts of speech to translate them.In addition, for culture-loaded words, annotation is needed. At the syntactic level, the translation difficulties mainly focus on the translation of passive sentences, attributive clauses, adverbial clauses and complex sentences, and explore and analyze these different sentence components through specific translation examples.Through this translation practice,I have realized that my translation ability needs to be further improved. The translator needs to extend the relevant translation knowledge and theory, constantly improve translation skills, broaden horizons in the rich process of practice and improve own writing ability, and lay a solid foundation for future translation.
