A Report On The E-C Translation Of A Post-liberal Approach To Language Policy In Education(Chapters 3-4)

The original text of this report is selected from A Post-Liberal Approach to Language Policy in Education written by Petrovic.The chosen part mainly involves two points: one is the correlation among communities,language and schooling;the other one is the promise and problem in Linguistic Human Rights.The translation report takes the Text Typology of Reiss as the theoretical base.According to Text Typology,the source text belongs to an informative text,so the translator should focus more on content rather than the form.Conveying the meaning concisely and accurately is the top priority for the translation of this kind of text.The whole translation process involves three steps,namely preparation before translation,translation process and proofreading after translation.By adopting certain translation methods,the translation quality and readability could be guaranteed.More specifically,at the lexical level,the names of persons are the major difficulties that the translator faces.Transliteration is adopted to deal with them.As for the terminologies,the translator adopts literal translation plus annotation to translate them.Because only literal translation is hard to make their hidden meaning clear,annotation is needed to supplement the hiding part.Liberal translation is also needed to guarantee the readability of the translated text.At the syntactic level,long and complex sentences and sentences with dashes are major challenges for the translator.Integrative recombination is a translation method that is used to adjust the orders of the sentences,so as to cater for the reading habit of the target readers.Another translation method is following the original syntactic order.This method is especially appropriate for long sentence translation.Moreover,addition is the most common methods in the translation field.The final method,zero transformation,is used to remain the original language styles and features of the source text unchanged.Although Reiss’ theory,Text Typology,gives a macro guidance of the whole report,the translator still realizes that the target text can be made a further revision and improvement.
