A Study On Interpretation Strategies Of Ironic Expressions

With the continuous acceleration of globalization,there are more and more communications among countries in many different fields.Interpretation is playing an increasingly important role in in-depth exchanges and foreign affairs activities at the national level.Due to the ever-changing international situation,there will be some frictions between some certain countries.However,in order to express the standings and attitudes without allowing the situation to deteriorate,in many cases,speakers will choose to use some ironic expressions to express some hidden meanings in their speeches.Irony has three major pragmatic forces,making criticism,showing power and saving face;the main factors that influencing the choice of interpretation strategies includes linguistic and cultural differences,the international political environment and the environment of interests,and the psychology of the speaker and listener.This thesis makes a detailed study about the ironic expressions in Wang Yi's speeches delivered in diplomatic activities in recent years by combining the pragmatic forces of irony and the factors influencing the choice of interpretation strategies.In the interpretation of ironic expressions,most of the words and sentences with clear expressions and intentions can use literal interpretation,while some has profound cultural connotations and meanings need to use liberal interpretation.Amplification is the addition of some words that omitted in Chinese chronically,to convey the ironic meaning and evade misunderstanding in an even better fashion.The application of combination is to simplify the sentences and deepen the ironic meaning by combining the wordy expressions in Chinese.Negation describes something from the opposite side to highlight their ironic meaning.These analyses indicate that: 1)the appropriateness or not about the application of interpretation strategies in interpreting ironic expressions has a lot of influences on thedevelopment of our diplomatic affairs;2)in the interpretation of the ironic expressions in the speeches of Foreign Minister Wang Yi,the interpreter needs to understand language structure and the content of target language,which will help to realize the ironic meaning and effect of original text.Therefore,in the future interpretation practices,interpreters must pay great attention to the study of ironic expressions,so as to improve the quality of interpretation,and ensure the smooth progress of foreign affairs activities.
