A Report On The Chinese Translation Of Tales From The Captain’s Log From Category Shift Perspective

This translation practice is the English-Chinese translation of the maritime English text Tales from the Captain’s Log(excerpts)guided by the structure shift,class shift and unit shift of translation shifts theory.The author writes this translation report by conducting a case study based on the above-mentioned translation practice.The results of case analysis are as follows: In the process of structure shift,the passive-voice sentences in the source language are transformed into active-voice sentences in the target language.The postpositive attributes in the source language such as attributive clauses,participle phrases and prepositional phrases are transformed into the prepositive attributes in the target language.The translation method of negation method is used in the English-Chinese transformation for the positive and negative words and expressions in the source language.With regard to class shift,the noun phrases and prepositional phrases are transformed into verbal phrases in the target language.And in terms of unit shift,the words and phrases in the source language are transformed into sentences respectively in the target language.The case analysis conducted herein shows that only by carrying out some necessary and appropriate translation shifts in the English-Chinese translation of maritime texts can we guarantee an accurate and natural target text which is highly readable.This translation practice has proved that the translation shifts theory can be applied to the Chinese translation of maritime English texts.It is hoped that the present translation practice can cast light on the translation research and practice of maritime texts at large.
