A Report On The Translation Of Accreditation System Of UK Engineers From The Perspective Of Communicative Translation Theory

This is a translation practice report,the materials are selected from the project of "Study on Accreditation System of UK Engineers".The author is responsible for the translation of Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering(CIPHE),the Institution of Agricultural Engineers(IAgrE)and Royal Aeronautical Society(RAeS).The accreditation system of UK engineers has been implemented for many years,which is mature and sound and enjoys high industry recognition.It is an example for our country in the area of engineer accreditation.In order to let more professionals in the field of engineering and other relevant aspects learn about the accreditation system of UK engineers and to promote the development of that of China,under the guidance of teachers,we did the project of "Study on Accreditation System of UK Engineers" and thoroughly studied the accreditation system of UK engineers,which includes the history of UK engineering management and professional accreditation,the ECUK,the35 professional accreditation institutions of engineers authorized by the ECUK etc.It is sincerely expected that our study can provide reference and guidance for China's engineer accreditation.This report consists of four parts.The first part is the description of the translation task,which represents the background of the translation task and the features of the original texts.The second part is the description of the translation process,in which the author describes the preparation,the translation process and the proofreading of the translation task.The third part is the case analysis,in this part the author gives an account of Newmark's translation theory.Then according to the theory of text typology of Reiss and Newmark,the author determines that the source materials belong to informative texts which should be translated under the instruction of communicative translation theory.Communicative translation theory emphasizes that translators should put target readers first,leaving no doubt and obscure to them.Communicative translation theory gives translators greater freedom to break limitations of the original texts and they can use certain translation skills to make the translated texts coherent,concise,clear and direct.Under the instruction of this theory,the author analyzes the specific translation skills and the achieved effects in practice from the aspect of word,sentence and paragraph to prove that communicative translation theory is suitable to instruct the translation of informative texts.The last part is conclusion,in which fruits and shortages in practice are summarized.The author has gained a comprehensive and deep understanding of communicative translation theory and the translation of informative texts via the translation practice report.And the author hopes that the experience in this practice can be applied to future translation practices and the level of translation can keep improving.
