As one of the most important means of transportation in the world, ocean shipping takes over two thirds of the total transportation volume of international trade.Over 90% of China's imports and exports are conveyed through it.Maritime English,as a necessary communication tool in this industry,is essential for all relevant staff to master.Hence, the study on the translation of maritime English is of great pragmatic importance.Stylistically, this OCIMF Mooring Equipment Guidelines also belongs to a branch of EST(English for science and technology)of ESP(English for specific purpose). It has specific communicative purposes and objectives, and thus features certain textual structure and style,as well as social functions.Under the guidance of the Skopos theory, the author has translated the first two chapters of the OCIMF Mooring Equipment Guidelines, and conducted research accordingly. After introducing the source and significance of the translation material, the author has had an general review of the guiding theory of translation;and,on the basis of the processes of translation(pre-translation preparation, analysis and expression, and post-translation checking),detailed analyses have been applied to the problems the author had during translation and corresponding solutions at three levels covering lexical terms, syntactic structure and discourse.Via this report, the author hopes to help target readers more clearly realize the importance of standardized mooring systems and normative mooring operations, and to offer useful experiences to translators engaged in similar translation materials.
