Medical English plays a significant role in international medical exchanges.Translation of the latest medical information helps advance the development of China's modern medicine.Studies on medical English are helpful to boost medical translation. Most of the existing medical translation reports focus on lexical, syntactic and discourse analysis and the use of translation techniques to produce the target text under the guidance of Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory. However, medical English vocabularies are not analyzed systematically. In addition,non-finite verbs and adjective clauses which are frequently used in medical English are rarely studied. There is little detailed introduction to the translation of semi-medical English vocabularies. This report, based on the English-Chinese translation practice of a medical paper and current researches on medical translation, tries to study the linguistic features of medical English in terms of vocabularies and sentences and find out difficulties of medical translation. This report adopts Newmark's Text Typology as the translation theory.According to the theory, medical papers belong to the informative text, whose main function is to deliver medical information and enhance communication. For this purpose, the essential step is to precisely translate medical vocabularies and sentences. On the lexical level, medical English vocabularies are divided into general vocabularies,semi-medical vocabularies and pure medical vocabularies.Among the three types of vocabularies, the difficulties of translation rise from semi-medical vocabularies and pure medical vocabularies.Pure medical vocabularies, often appearing as abbreviations, are used only in medical science.Semi-medical vocabularies are the general vocabularies which have unique medical meanings when used in the field of medicine. On the syntactic level, medical sentences in English are featured with the use of passive voice,non-finite verbs and adjective clauses, among which non-finite verbs and adjective clauses are not easy to translate.Since several non-finite verbs can be included in a sentence,it is very important to express the relationship which the non-finite verbs aim to show. The translator should translate non-finite verbs into Chinese clearly. The difficulty in translating adjective clauses is to discover the antecedent given the fact that the antecedent can be separated by other components.E-dictionaries can be used to efficiently and accurately find out the meaning of pure medical vocabularies. In terms of translation of semi-medical vocabularies, the medical meaning of some semi-medical vocabularies can be learned through CNKI translation app.For some other semi-medical vocabularies,e-dictionaries and related medical websites should be employed together to identify their medical meaning.Grammar and medical knowledge are helpful to address the difficulties in translating non-finite verbs and adjective clauses.
