A Practice Report On Semantic Compensation In The English Translation Of Featured Vocabularies In National Costumes-manchu Volume(Excerpt)

From the perspective of compensation translation theory,this practice report discusses the application and validity of compensation translation theory in semantic compensation in the English translation of featured vocabularies,focusing on semantic compensation in the English translation of featured vocabularies and taking some chapters of Illustrated Art Book of Chinese National Costumes-Manchu Volume as the object of translation.The content of selected text is the evolution process of Manchu and its costumes,which involves national featured vocabularies related to Manchu costumes in different periods.In the revision of the original version,it was found that the translation problems of the original version were caused by cognitive understanding deviation,inaccurate semantic expression and so on.After being analyzed and sorted out,the causes of these translation problems are defined as: lack in cultural concepts of featured vocabularies,differences in cognitive understanding of featured vocabularies,semantic abstraction and lack in semantic concreteness of featured vocabularies,and semantic redundancy and lack in semantic refinement of featured vocabularies.Different translation strategies are respectively adopted as solutions in the revision stage of translation.In view of lack in cultural concepts of featured vocabularies,the semantic amplification compensation of featured vocabularies is adopted;In view of differences in cognitive understanding of featured vocabularies,semantic paraphrase compensation of featured vocabularies is adopted;In view of semantic abstraction and lack in semantic concreteness of featured vocabularies,the semantic specific compensation of featured vocabularies is adopted;In view of semantic redundancy and lack in semantic refinement of featured vocabularies,the semantic omission compensation of featured vocabularies is adopted.Case analysis and summary of translation practice show that the translation compensation theory has certain guiding significance and practical value for theEnglish translation of featured vocabularies in Manchu costumes.The application of relevant compensation strategies solves the problems found in translation practice and improves the translation quality and accuracy to a certain extent.
