Taking semantic compensation as the perspective, the English translation of Chinese culture-loaded words as the focus, the news texts of China Comment as the translation materials, this practice report explores the application of semantic compensation in the English translation of Chinese culture-loaded words. The English readers can have deeper understanding of Chinese society and culture through these culture-loaded words that can best reflect China’s unique culture, custom and national conditions. Thus the influence of Chinese culture becomes stronger. However, due to the great differences of cultural cognition and cultural concepts between China and the West, semantic deviations and loss are sometimes inevitable in the English translation of Chinese culture-loaded words. The English translation may even be contrary to the original meaning. To solve these problems, this practice report explores the application of the four semantic compensation methods in the English translation of Chinese culture-loaded words from the perspective of semantic compensation. These four semantic compensation methods are semantic amplification compensation, semantic explanation compensation, semantic substitution compensation and semantic annotation compensation. The news texts this project adopts are news comments and news features. These articles contain many culture-loaded words in various fields such as education, medical care and economics.Case analyses and the summaries of the translation practice prove that semantic compensation plays an active role in the English translation of Chinese culture-loaded words. This practice report is expected to have some reference value to the English translation of Chinese culture-loaded words in news texts.
