Classical Chinese has been widely known to the world as one of the representatives of Chinese culture.Based on semantic compensation theories, this report gives an analysis to the application of semantic compensation tactics in the English translation of classical Chinese quoted from the textbook An Outline to Chinese Culture(Excerpt),aiming at delivering to western readers the classical Chinese that carries the traditional thoughts and orientation of value of China in an accurate and expressive attempt.Being a typical informative text, the source text in the translation project is a selection of 2 chapters from An Outline to Chinese Culture that cover educational thoughts and moral principles in ancient China and quote a large number of writings in classical Chinese as its arguments. However,as a result of the great differences existing among the languages and cultures between China and the west, problems occur regarding loss of inter-sentence cohesion, discrepant understandings, unclear connotations, cultural default and semantic misunderstandings of background information in the Chinese-to-English translation of classical Chinese, also attributing to the special sentence structure and the ancient way of expression found in writings of classical Chinese that likely lead to confusion and difficulties in comprehending and translating the source text. Therefore, with regard to the problems drawn from the translating practices, the report discusses five practical tactics of semantic compensation applied in the English translation of classical Chinese, namely semantic textual cohesion, semantic contextual amplification, semantic paraphrase, semantic annotation and semantic adaption regarding various problems.Through plenty of case analysis and applications,it's proved that to a certain degree, semantic compensation works in the English translation of writings of classical Chinese with its guiding and practical value.
