A Practice Report On Semantic Compensation In The English Translation Of Featured Vocabulary In Chinese Maritime Culture·Liaoning Volume(Excerpt)

Maritime culture has been widely concerned in the world as an ancient historical existence almost as long as human beings.From the perspective of semantic compensation theories,this report focuses on the translation of featured vocabulary into English and gives an analysis to the application and validity of semantic compensation tactics in the English translation of featured vocabulary quoted from Chinese Maritime Culture · Liaoning Volume(Excerpt),one of the series of “Chinese maritime culture”.The contents of selected text of the English translation practice include the evolvement of geography and history,the development of marine industries,marine folkways and coastal scenic spots in Liaoning coastal areas,which involves national featured vocabulary related to maritime culture.However,as a result of the great differences existing among the languages and cultures between China and the west,problems occur regarding discrepant understandings of featured vocabulary,lack of associative meaning of featured vocabulary,cultural default of featured vocabulary and unclear connotations of metaphor of featured vocabulary in the Chinese-to-English translation that likely lead to mistranslation or loss of translation.Therefore,with regard to the problems drawn from the translating practices,this report discusses four practical tactics of semantic compensation applied in the English translation of featured vocabulary,namely semantic paraphrase compensation of featured vocabulary,semantic amplification compensation of featured vocabulary,semantic annotation compensation of featured vocabulary,semantic extension compensation of featured vocabulary regarding various problems.Case analysis and summary of translation practice show that semantic compensation tactics under the guidance of translation compensation theories have certain guiding significance and practical value for the English translation of featured vocabulary in maritime culture.The problems found in translation practice have been solved and the translation quality and accuracy have been improved to a certain extent.It is expected that this practice report will provide some enlightenment and reference value for English translation of Chinese featured vocabulary.
