Phonetic parody,as one of main forms of phonetic metaphor,finding an increasingly wide utilization in naming TV shows in China.Some scholars conduct varying degrees of research on parody mainly from the perspectives of rhetoric,pragmatics and cognitive linguistics.Nevertheless,these studies mainly focus on discussing parody applied in advertising slogan,Chinese four-character idiom,and the few studies on China's TV show name mostly center on its rhetoric effect,social response and commercial values,without assistance of solid theoretical foundation and corpus.There is no scholar exploring cognitive mechanism and expressing effects of parodying name of China's TV show(TV parody)from the perspective of cognitive linguistics.Embarking from cognitive linguistics,by taking 132 TV parodies that are exhaustively collected as a close corpus,this thesis attempts to explore generative mechanism of TV parody under PC model that is established by integrating phonetic metaphor and construction coercion.The author offers a set of feasible suggestions to judging the best TV parody through analyzing language characteristics in terms of phonetic,syntactic,semantic and pragmatic aspects.The contributions of this thesis are listed as following:Firstly,taking into account of limitations of previous studies,this thesis attempts to construct PC model from cognitive linguistics point of view and explore generative mechanism of TV parody.A set of feasible suggestions are presented for judging the best TV parody,which has great implications for naming TV show in the future as well as contributes to social innovation and promotes people's cognitive competence.Secondly,preliminary data are reached through setting up and analyzing the close corpus,which shows as following:(1)On the basis of PC,TV parody is generated through phonetic metaphoric mapping between parodying expression and its corresponding prototypical construction as well as the function of coercion.(2)Talk show represents the most popular one of being given parodying name among the 17 types of TV shows,which accounts for 31.06%,followed by singing show and food show,accounting for 12.87% and 12.12% respectively.Among the 132 TV parodies,NT are in the majority,accounting for 42.42%,NM accounting for 28.78%,NH and NP account for 15.90% and 8.33% respectively,NS are the least,allocating just 3.78%.On the whole,NT and NM are preferred by nearly all kinds of TV shows,TV parodies such as parodying names of talk show and food show are more likely to highlight host,parodying name of quiz show,recruitment show,comedy show,female's fashion show,public service show and newscast show mainly emphasize on manner.(3)The author analyzes TV parody on the basis of PC model,and four conditions must be met simultaneously in the course of phonetic metaphorical mapping and inheriting interactive process between parodying expression and its corresponding prototypical construction.a: The initial consonant,final and tone of parodying lexical items are identical with their prototypical counterparts,or same initial consonants but either different finals or tones.b: There is only one parodying Chinese character or two identical ones or two different parodying characters with similar meaning.c: Parodying expression perfectly inherits the meaning from its prototypical expression.d: New meanings are created and special expressing effects conveyed.
