| Giorgio de Chirico one of the founders of the metaphysical school in the period of Italian modernism, has a mysterious, quiet, poetic and rational artistic outlook. It inspired surrealist painting and the rise of many modern art schools.Starting from the composition of light and shadow in Chirico’s paintings, this paper mainly studies the factors behind its unique light and shade effect, and tries to explain the relationship between the elements in the picture. The special use of light and shadow is the symbolic expression in Chirico ’s paintings. The painter expresses his artistic pursuit through a subjective combination of light and shadow in ‘autumn afternoon’ and architecture and sculpture, which is full of symbols and metaphors and creates mysterious and silent forms and atmosphere,in order to achieve the highest metaphysical ideal. In his paintings, time and space present a specific multiple meanings, but under the unified effect of light and shadow, this contradiction makes the picture more unique and becomes the charm of his metaphysical painting. The overall picture of cilico presents a quiet and profound atmosphere with a strong sense of "stillness",which forms spiritual space-time experience and emotional fluctuation in the viewers’ psychology. What’s more worth mentioning is that he applied the spirit of classical painting and his own classical complex to the exploration of metaphysical painting, forming a unique and novel artistic perspective and broadening the form and connotation of metaphysical painting. |
