A Report On The Chinese-English Translation Of The Meandering Jinjiang River:the History Of Bashu Culture(Excerpts From Chapter Two)

This is a report on the translation of The Meandering Jinjiang River: The History of Bashu Culture(Chapter Two).The original work of this translation project was conceived by Tan Luofei and written by Duan Yu.It describes the historical process of the Bashu culture and the rich Bashu cultural relics in detail.The second chapter the translator translates mainly contains a large number of objective descriptions of cultural relics and culture.It belongs to typical historical and cultural information texts,including descriptions of brilliant bronze culture,mysterious gold sceptre and gold mask,unique early city,from the rule of deity to the rule of man,and religion and witchcraft.The translation of this section is beneficial to the external communication of the Bashu culture,also helps foreign readers to understand the splendid bronze culture,gold culture,early urban development culture and the religious and witchcraft culture of the Bashu.In the translations of this selected section,the translation of cultural words is the focus and difficulty to solve.So in this translation report,guided by Newmark's translation theory,the translator explores the application of communicative translation theory in the translation of informative texts from Chinese to English,focusing on how to apply Newmark's translation theory to the translation of cultural words.Newmark divided cultural words into five categories,namely,ecology,material culture,social culture,political and religious,gestures and habits,but this translation project mainly covers three of these categories.Due to the particularity and complexity of cultural factors,the translation of cultural words is flexible.Based on Newmark's translation theory,the translator adopts the techniques of annotation,specification,paraphrase and some other flexible ways,striving to make the information transmitted by the translation more accurate,while retaining the cultural charm it deserves.
