The source text for translation is Chapter 6 and Chapter 7 of The Chinese Tao of Business published by John Wiley & Sons in 2004.The authors,George T.Haley,Usha C.V.Haley,Chin Tiong Tan,aim to explain how managers discover, develop and implement successful business strategies for China as well as the world economy. It is typically an informative text. The translation project focuses on reproducing the source text and providing a logical, fluent, and readable target text for readers. This translation report is written under the framework of Peter Newmark's communicative translation theory as well as his semantic translation theory.Specific translation techniques are adopted in view of the readers' responses and with full consideration of the informative characteristics of the source text. The translation aims to achieve the standards of accuracy, logic, fluency, readability, and professionalization of the target text. Some translation difficulties are overcome, especially the translation of ambiguous words, business terminologies, and long and complex sentences, etc. The major translation techniques fall into two major levels: lexical and syntactic. The former includes conversion of word classes, omission, amplification, and paraphrasing as well as professionalization of terminologies and proper names. The latter covers paraphrasing, conversion of phrase types, using the topiccomment structure, restructuring, and splitting. The translation report concerns detailed case studies on the lexical level and syntactic level. The main cases concentrate on the application of paraphrasing, restructuring, omission, and splitting. It is hoped that this report offers some insights into the translation of business informative text and helps readers gain a deeper understanding of local business strategies.
