The Effect Of Return Expectation And Empathy On Helping Behavior

No matter in the traditional or contemporary mainstream cultural environment,helping others has always been regarded as a noble,moral behavior and has been widely advocated.However,among the existing researches on the behavior of helping people,domestic studies focus more on sociology and pedagogy,but few studies study the relationship among expectation of return,empathy and helping behavior from the perspective of psychology.In this study,students from Sichuan University of Science and Technology were selected as subjects,and the effects of expectation of return and empathy on the behavior of helping people were studied and discussed by the experimental method.The study was composed of two experimental designs.Study 1: the implicit helping attitude of subjects was investigated by GNAT program.Using the help-unaided behavior word,the retributive-non-retributive word as the stimulus material,the GNAT program was used to detect the subjects' "help-reward","help-non-reward","non-help-reward","non-helper-reward".There is a significant difference in response time and sensitivity between "unaided and unrewarding" joint tasks,so as to achieve more objective verification of the expected impact of reward on helping behavior.Study 2: the adaptation of "dictator's game" was used to explore the effects of expectation of reward and empathy on their helping behavior.A hybrid design of 2(high expected returns,low)× 2(high empathy and low empathy)will result in the different levels of empathy measured by the "dictator game" being high,The distributive outcome at low return expectation level is used as a measure of the level of helping behavior.The main results are as follows:(1)in the case of helping others,the implicit helping attitude of the individual tends to be beneficial to the helping behavior,but in the case of non-helping people,the return has no significant effect on the individual.(2)whether empathic or not,individuals under the condition of high return showed a higher level of helping behavior,and the main effect of expected return on helping behavior was significant.(3)whether the expected return is high or low,the empathic individuals show a higher level of helping behavior,and the main effect of empathy on the helping behavior is significant.(4)under the condition of "empathy high return",individuals showed the highest level of helping behavior,and the interaction between expectation of return and empathy was significant..
