A Translation Report On Records Of Chengdu's Streets And Alleys (Excerpts) From The Perspective Of Linguistic Adaptation Theory

This report is based on the translation practice of an excerpt from Records of Chengdu's Streets and Alleys.Published by Sichuan Education Press in April 2010,the book is a masterpiece of Chengdu culture from the perspectives of the history and development of Chengdu's streets and alleys.The author of this report is responsible for the translation from page 55 to 95,which covers the introductions of major gates and rivers' names,including their origins,developments and current conditions.The source text is featured by abundant historical data and strict logical deduction.It follows a plain and colloquial language style,not without quotations from classic literature,making it of scientific,appreciative,practical benefits.The source text is featured by various names of places.Besides,sentences are generally long ones due to the diachronic description.During translation,place names,long sentences,as well as poems constitute the main difficulties for the translator.In consideration of features and obstacles,the author of this report selects Linguistic Adaptation theory,proposed by Jef Verschueren,as the guiding theory.This report includes five chapters: Chapter one introduces the background and significance of the translation project.Chapter two presents three translation processes,containing before translation preparations,during translation work and after translation activities.Chapter three gives an introduction to the theoretical basis of this report,including its origin,developments and major notions.Chapter four covers 30 case studies about the process of problem-solving from its four perspectives,which are contextual correlates of adaptability,structural objects of adaptability,and dynamics of adaptability and salience of the adaptation processes.In particular,the author of this report mainly presents her attempts of the first two categories.The author concludes the project report from the lessons gained in Chapter five.Through this translation practice,the author is able to apply different translation skills more flexibly under the guidance of Linguistic Adaptation theory.With the completion of the project,she also attaches more importance to teamwork.Besides,she has gained a deeper understanding of Chengdu local culture and Linguist Adaptation theory.Besides,she Places need further efforts are inaccurate comprehension and unfaithful translation due to a lack of parallel text and translator's poor command of both languages.In a word,this report provides certain reference for the follow-up translation of the source text.
