A Report On C-E Translation Of Records Of Streets And Alleys In Chengdu (Excerpt) Under The Guidance Of Linguistic Adaptation Theory

This report is based on the translation practice of an excerpt from Records of Streets and Alleys in Chengdu.Published by Sichuan Education Press in 2010,the book is the first masterpiece in China that shows the culture of Chengdu from the perspective of the history and development of streets and alleys in Chengdu.The author of this report is responsible for the translation from page 327 to 346.Spanning from late Qing Dynasty to the beginning of reform and opening up,the excerpt is featured with adequate information.It introduces streets and alleys named after official and military organizations,probing into their origins,development and current conditions,and related anecdotes.The difficulty in translation lies in lexical and sentential level: the former is about the proper names of places,tittles,and officials,and the latter is about some long sentences.Combining the characteristics of the original text and the difficulty of translation,the author uses the linguistic adaptation theory proposed by Jef Verschueren as the guiding theory to solve the problems encountered in translation and then summarizes the experience and lessons in translation practice.This report consists of five chapters: Chapter One gives an introduction to the background and significance of the translation project,feature of source text,and difficulties in translation.Chapter Two presents three stages of translation,which contains preparations before translation,during translation work and after translation activities.Chapter Three introduces the theoretical basis,which is Linguistic Adaptation Theory proposed by Jef Verschuren,of this report.Chapter Four covers 30 case studies employed with translation techniques like conversion,division,addition,and omission that addresses the process of problem-solving from four perspectives,which are Structural Objects of Adaptability,Contextual Correlates of Adaptability,Dynamics of Adaptability and Salience of the Adaptation Processes.Chapter Five is a conclusion of the translation report.It is concluded that the translation report has certain reference significance in understanding historical and academic texts,selecting theories in translation,and improving translation practice.Through this translation practice,the author has gained a deeper understanding of Chengdu culture and Linguistic Adaptation theory.Besides,he is able to apply translation strategies and techniques more appropriately to solve specific problems in translation practice.Parts of this report that need further improvement including inaccurate comprehension of source text and unauthentic translation,and these certainly will be revised and improved.
