The translation of this text opens a window to learn the advanced and scientific knowledge of depression and bipolar disorder in the western world.Besides,through translation,the translator can have a further comprehension of such type of text and grasp relative translation skills and professional knowledge.The translator hopes that the translation material can offer more information to the research and study in this field.This is a project report on translation of the third chapter of The Disordered Mind: What Unusual Brains Tell Us About Ourselves,which is compiled by Eric r.Kandel,a scientist and a recipient of Nobel Prize in medicine.In this chapter,the author respectively introduces the causes of depression and bipolar disorder,and describes the symptoms in detail,accompanied by some individual cases,and gives the treating methods which are feasible today and his optimistic expectations for the future curing methods,which make readers have a scientific and objective understanding of the two diseases.According to Katharina Reiss' s text typology theory,the original text is an informative text.Based on the translation methods suggested by Reiss for different texts,in the translation process of this chapter,the translator mainly pays attention to the content of the original text and tries to remove the reading barriers of the target readers and make the translation easily understood.
