A Practice Report On The Biography Translation Under The Guidance Of Skopos Theory

This translation practice report is based on the translation practice of Churchill.The translator has excerpted parts of the first and third chapters of Churchill,with a total translation of nearly 16,000 words.Churchill has clear themes and vivid descriptions of the characters.The style of its word is witty,full of variations in word choice,sentence structure,and rhetorical style.Churchill is a masterpiece of contemporary political biography.This translation practice report will be based on Skopos theory.Skopos theory is an important functional translation theory.As the name implies,any translation can be considered as an “behavior”,and any behavior has its goal or purpose.Vermeer chooses the word “Skopos” to refer specifically to the target or purpose of the translation.Through translating Churchill,translator can apply translation theory and skills to specific translation practice and improve their translation practice ability.To start with,this dissertation introduces some background information,including the value and importance of the topic,the author of the Churchill,as well as the content and personality of Churchill,and discusses the difficulties and characteristics of the expected translation.Secondly,it introduces the process of translation practice and the implementation of the translation plan,as well as the relevant situation of translation quality control.Thirdly,under the principle of Skopos theory and taking historical terms,political terms,military terms,personalized language,and speech as examples,the author will analyse translation skills in practical cases of translation.Finally,the author puts forward his views and suggestions on biography translation.The difficulties,as well as the inspiration and thinking for the future study are elaborated.
