Taking the translation of Noe Jordania Father of Modern Georgia as an example, this thesis explores the application of the coherence rule of Hans J.Vermeer's Skopos Theory in translating specific cases of biographies. As biographical literature, this translation material is characterized by both historical authenticity and literariness, aiming to rather completely reproduce the hero's life experiences and personality. As is noted in Skopos Theory, the coherence rule is considered subordinate to the Skopos rule, and the coherence should be achieved on the condition that the Skopos rule is observed first. To achieve coherence, the translation must be coherent in itself, and more importantly,it must go with the target readers' knowledge and the actual situation in order to make it readable and acceptable. This thesis discusses the application of the coherence rule to the translation of typical examples in Noe Jordania Father of Modern Georgia at the levels of semantics, syntax and pragmatics.Under the governing communicative purposes of biographical literature,it analyses different translation methods for solving problems arising in the process of translation so as to make the target text readable and acceptable. At the level of semantics, translation methods like explicitation of pronouns, addition and omission are adopted;at the level of syntax, translation methods like conversion in part of speech, adjustment of sequence of components in sentences and conversion in linguistic unit are used;at the level of pragmatics,it analyzes methods like literal translation with notes, partial transliteration plus partial free translation and achieving agreement of style. It shows that the coherence rule has a guiding function on the biographical translation. Before translation, translators should work out what the target text is aimed for based on the features and background information of the biography.During translation, translators should bear in mind the translation's purposes and make sure it is coherent with them.Regarding the parts that undermine readability and acceptability, translators should focus on bridging the differences in language, mode of thinking and culture between the source and target readers, trying to minimize the foreignness of the target text so that the translation is consistent with the original text and the biography's literariness and the hero's personality are made manifest.
