With the increasingly close academic exchanges among countries, the translation of academic texts becomes more and more pivotal. It has both practical significance and academic value, which contributes to the development of the discipline itself and translation. This report is based on the translation of the first chapter of The Study of Music Therapy.Music therapy is not rich in domestic academic resources, and the introduction of foreign works is very limited. The translation of such text can import advanced academic achievements, thus providing references for the theoretical research and therapeutic practice in the profession. The source text is an academic text with proper nouns, complex structures, and recondite languages. In the translation process, the translator has found many ambiguities in lexical meanings, grammatical structures and semantic relations. They include lexical ambiguities caused by general words, polysemy and synonymy, grammatical ambiguities caused by unclear objects modified by clauses and prepositional structures, and semantic ambiguities resulting from negation and comparison.Ambiguity is an inherent problem of language, which is difficult to resolve through grammatical analysis.Formal logic is a discipline that studies thinking activities, which can solve the translation problems that cannot be solved through parsing. Therefore, basic laws of formal logic are taken as the theoretical guidance. The translator uses the law of identity, law of contradiction, and law of excluded middle to dispel lexical, grammatical and semantic ambiguities in the source text, avoiding conceptual confusion,self-contradiction,and imprecision.Techniques of order adjustment, amplification, extension, and division are utilized to ensure the translation quality. This report elaborates on the translation process, problems encountered in translation and their solutions with the thorough analysis of typical cases and comprehensive summary of translation experience, which aims to provide reference methods for the disambiguation in English-Chinese translation as well as examples for the translation of relevant subjects.
