The translation report consists of the selected text, the translated text and a critical commentary. The texts are selected from Following Fish:One Man's Journey into Food and Culture of the Indian Coast written by Samanth Subramanian. The book is a reportage based on the writer's observations of India, from which readers may have a glimpse of Indian society and culture. The selected material, chapter 5 and chapter 7,respectively present Indian dishes made of fish and environmental issues along the Indian coasts. The translation project uses Peter Newmark's theory of communicative translation to guide the translation process and evaluate the effects of the translation product. At the lexical level, translation techniques such as semantic extension, conversion and using Chinese idioms, are employed. At the sentential level, translation skills such as restructuring, following the original order and turning passive voices into active voices, are adopted. It seems that works on Indian society have been insufficiently translated into China,so this project hopes to help Chinese readers obtain more understanding of Indian literature. |
