With the continuous advancement of “the Belt and Road” initiative,an increasing number of Chinese are involved in the infrastructure construction in Africa.Facing the harsh natural environment, they may inevitably get ill and seek medical treatment.Meanwhile the interpreters serve as the bridge of communication and their performance is closely related to the outcome of diagnosis and treatment, and even the safety of the patient.Considering this,it is necessary to select appropriate interpreting strategies.Due to the differences in Chinese and English language structures and cultural backgrounds in medical settings, interpreters should pay more attention to sense equivalences in the discourse instead of the linguistic forms of the original language. This agrees with the view of “deverbalization” advocated by the interpretive theory of translation. Therefore, the interpretive theory plays an important role in guiding interpreting in medical settings. This paper first introduces the background of interpreting practice and reviews the whole preparation process. Then the theory of interpretation is expounded in detail.Next,it explores the specific problems and puts forward corresponding solutions. With the application of interpreting tactics like generalization, omission, explanation, division, combination among others, the interpreter finishes the task successfully. Finally, after analyzing and reflecting this interpreting practice, the author found grammar mistakes, missing interpretation, misinterpretation and correction in the process.Although the author dealt with these problems by adopting coping tactics,he still needs to enhance his interpreting skills and linguistic proficiency through practice.Furthermore,a large pool of knowledge should also be established. It is hoped that this report can provide some practical guidance to the study of interpretive theory and the development of medical interpreting in the future.
