A Report On The Simulated E-C Consecutive Interpreting From The Perspective Of Interpretive Theory

The press conference plays a crucial role in spreading information to the public quickly and it opens a window for native Chinese speakers to keep up with the latest world affairs.This report is based on a press conference revealing the first image of black hole jointly released by the U.S.National Science Foundation and the Event Horizon Telescope(EHT)project.The report not only requires the interpreter to be equipped with professional English and Chinese language skills,but also demands an in-depth understanding of relevant background knowledge.From the perspective of the interpretive theory,the report discusses the application of the interpretive theory to English-Chinese press conferences by combining various interpreting strategies.The interpretive theory breaks the traditional thinking pattern of "comprehension and reformulation" and puts forward a triangular mode,that is,"comprehension,deverbalization and reformulation".This report uses all the three strategies.In addition,the interpreter also makes full preparations for the project,in terms of the theme and terminology knowledge.In view of colloquialism,information redundancy,and long and complex sentences in the process of interpretation,this report puts forward some interpreting strategies and methods to cope with them,such as free interpreting,omission,syntactic linearity and sentence restructuring.At the end of the report,the author elaborates reflections on the project and analyzes the implications of this report for interpreters to cope with similar interpreting tasks in the future.Through the practice of consecutive interpreting of this material and in-depth research of this practice,it enables interpreters to learn more information about black holes,understand the process of interpreting for the press conference,master the interpreting strategies and skills of the press conference,deeply study the interpretive theory and interpreting strategies,and combine theory with practice,and thus establish a set of interpreting methods and strategies for the press conference.All in all,the interpreter hopes to improve the quality of interpreting in the future through this practice.
