A Report On The E-C Translation Of Science Fiction:the New Critical Idiom(Chapter One)

The thesis is a report based on the translation practice of the first chapter of Science Fiction: the New Critical Idiom,which mainly involves various definitions of science fiction and reviews their features.The author of the book quotes and compares the views of many critics and lists a number of science fiction works to criticize and elaborate on science fiction as a term.The source text is a criticism with objective and normative linguistic features,and also refers to science fiction works,movies,writers,scientific terms,some long sentences with characteristic of science fiction,as well as some extracts from many works,which are the key points and difficulties of the practice.Therefore,with the help of the net and many relevant books on science fiction and criticism,and under the guidance of Yan Fu's principle of “faithfulness”,“expressiveness” and “elegance”,the translator uses proper translation methods and skills,such as literal translation,transliteration,free translation,amplification and division to solve the problems encountered in the process of translation practice.In this way,the report aims at discussing the translation skills of science fiction and criticism.On the one hand,it can provide some reference for the translation of science fiction in China,on the other hand,it could make more and more people accept science fiction by spreading it so as to achieve the purpose of intercultural communication.This report consists of five parts.The first part briefly describes the background,significance,and plan of the research.The second part analyzes and summarizes the language features of the original text as well as the characteristics of the science fiction text,and describes the translation tools,the terminology tables and the translation principles used by the translator in the translation process.In the third part,through some examples in practice,and under the guidance of Yan Fu's principle,the translator deals with some practical problems encountered in the translation process from lexical and syntactic level so as to explore the translation skills of science fiction and criticism.The fourth part refers to this report assessments from the translator's tutor and classmates.In the fifth part,the translator concludes the gains and shortcomings,feelings and prospects in the process of translation practice,hoping to make a further progress in the future study.
