Reading is an important part of senior high English teaching,accounting for about 1/4 scores of college entrance examination.Therefore,the importance of English reading teaching is obvious in senior high schools.Most English teachers are able to recognize the importance of reading teaching and have a lot of discussion on reading teaching.Some researches point out that almost half of teachers use task-based teaching approach in senior high English reading teaching.This teaching method could help to improve students’ reading level,but it is not beneficial to cultivate students’ ability of comprehensive analysis and logical thinking.Some researches find that more than half of English teachers in senior high schools believe that the purpose of reading teaching is to improve students’ reading level and the ability to analyze long sentences.In this case,students have a good grasp of grammar,but the competence of analyzing text and finding the relationship between paragraph structure and sentences is not very satisfactory.In recent years,the emergence of genre-based teaching approach has provided a new idea for English reading teaching.Genre-based teaching approach came into being in the 1980 s,and it applies genre and genre analysis to classroom teaching.Some foreign scholars apply genre-based teaching approach to language teaching in primary and secondary schools,while some Chinese scholars apply it to college English reading teaching.However,there are few researches applying genre-based teaching approach to senior high English reading teaching.In the further development of genre-based teaching approach,some researchers bring forward that genre-based teaching approach could improve students’ reading level,reading interest and reading confidence.However,few researchers discuss that in what aspects students’ reading levels can be improved.This study attempts to apply genre-based teaching approach to senior high English reading teaching to explore its further influence and effect on reading teaching.Therefore,the study puts forward the following two research questions:Ⅰ.In what aspects does genre-based teaching approach affect students’ English reading level?Ⅱ.In what ways can genre-based teaching approach be applied to senior high English reading teaching more effectively?This study uses questionnaire method,text analysis method and experimental method.The author conducts a four-month teaching experiment at Xuchang Experimental Middle School.The subjects of the study are two parallel classes in the second year of senior high,with class 8 and class 9 as experimental class and control class.Before the experiment,the pre-test is used to test if there is a difference in students’ reading level between the two classes.After the experiment,the post-test is conducted in order to test the changes of students’ reading scores in two classes.The author uses SPSS 20.0 to analyze and discuss the data.The results of the study show that students’ English reading scores of experimental class are significantly higher than control class.Students’ scores in experimental class have improved on the detail and text structured in narration,the inference and judgement as well as the detail in argumentation,the text structured and the detail in exposition,the summing up and summarizing as well as the detail in practical writing.From the results of the questionnaire,it shows that 76% students in experimental class are satisfied with applying genre-based teaching approach to English reading teaching.Meanwhile,students could accept the arrangement of content,time and teaching procedure of genre-based teaching approach in the classroom teaching,identify different genres,understand that different genres of discourses have different types and structures,and find the topic sentence of each paragraph and main idea of a passage.In addition,genre-based teaching approach could help to increase students’ reading interest and reduce students’ reading difficulty.Therefore,it is feasible to apply genre-based teaching approach to English reading teaching in senior high school.
