This paper is a project report based on the translation of World Heritage and Tourism in a Changing Climate,an environmental report jointly published by the United Nations Educational,Scientific and Cultural Organization(UNESCO),United Nations Environment Program(UNEP)and the Union of Concerned Scientists(UCS)in Paris on May 26,2016.From this report, descriptions of rune world heritage sites in North America,Latin America and Europe are selected to be put into translation practice, aiming to explore the translation skills and strategies of the environmental research report so as to provide a reference for related subjects. The source text of this project is a research report characterized with both natural science and social science, covering interdisciplinary knowledge on such subjects as tourism, environmental protection, climate and geology. These textual features demand specific considerations in the process of translation.First,as the text is a professional report on environmental issues, there are a good number of proper names and terminologies, which call for proper rendering into standard Chinese equivalents to ensure the quality of translation.Second, this report includes many vivid descriptions of world heritage sites with exceptional natural beauty and cultural significance. It combines popular science with reality, contrasting current climate-changed landscapes with what they were in history. In this case, the translator must polish the translated language to represent the earnest urge this report conveys to enhance people's awareness of climate-friendly environment protection. Finally, the source text is written in a formal style with a good many complicated sentences, which means various strategies must be adopted to improve the fluency of the target text.In structure, this report is composed of four parts. The first part is a brief introduction of this translation project, signifying its background, significance and layout. The second part is about the preparation for the translation, specific techniques used in the translation and the modification and polishing after translation. As for the preparation,it mainly consists of the analysis of the text, the technical preparation and the plan on translation progress. The third part is the analysis of some specific translation techniques taken up in the translation with the support of case studies, including translations of proper names, terminologies and complicated sentences. The fourth part is a summary with reflections upon this project as well as the lessons learned from translation practice.
