A Project Report On C-E Translation Of World Heritage City·Suzhou

In early 2018,Suzhou became China’s first official member city of World Heritage Cities.The Culture,Radio,Film and Television Bureau of Suzhou City took this opportunity to launch the book World Heritage City · Suzhou,which promotes the existing world heritages in Suzhou both in Chinese and English.Through supervisor’s introduction,the author overtakes the C-E translation work of this book,and writes this project report on the translated text.World Heritage is an important gateway for the world to understand China since they are the finest display of China’s long history and splendid civilization.Facilitating China’s world heritage to “go global” is an important part in building the national image.Therefore,the translation of the World Heritage Project deserves some in-depth study by translators.Based on the translation practice of World Heritage City · Suzhou,this project report chooses Peter Newmark’s Text Typology as the guiding theory.This report explores the principles and strategies in the English translation of World Heritage introduction with examples.It focuses on three major difficulties in translation,namely,culture-loaded words,names of scenic spots,and syntactic issues.It also explores the application of some feasible solutions to the above difficulties by examples.Amplification,analogy and emission can be used to translate the terms utilized in the ancient times,idioms and four-character expressions.Literation,literal translation,and adding annotation are essential in rendering the names of scenic spots.As for the syntactic issues,it is useful to change perspective,reposition components and paraphrase.In the conclusion part,the author makes a reflection.World Heritage translation has the characteristics of both tourism translation and publicity-oriented translation.Since Chinese and English have different convention in composing such texts,much should be considered in order to enable the English translation to better meet the expectations of target readers and serve the purpose of promoting Chinese culture.This report is expected to be referential for the theories and practices in the field of English translation of World Heritage introduction.
