From Root-losing To Rooting-growing

Since the 20 th century,in the 20 s and 30 s,there was a trend of "root-seeking" in the United States,in the 1950 s and 1960 s,there was a trend of magical realism in Latin American,in the 1960 s and 1970 s,there was a writing of "root-losing generation" in Taiwan,and in the mid-to-late 1980 s,"root-seeking" literature emerged in the mainland China.Visibly,the significance of "root" consistently throughout the domestic and foreign literature of the 20 th century,"root-seeking" has also become a universal literary theme.As a representative writer of Taiwan's "root-seeking" novels,Bai Xianyong's "root-seeking" consciousness in his creation is influenced by the theme of "seeking roots" in world literature,it is the inner spiritual hub that links Taiwan and the mainland's "root-seeking" literary creation,and is also a special point to analyze the "Chinese traditional national culture" that inherited by Taiwan literature.This paper is divided into five parts to study this.The first part is the introduction,which mainly deals with the connection of consciousness of "root-seeking" between Taiwan literature and foreign literature.The "root-seeking" trend of the United States has the national identity crisis and the urgent self-identification which caused by the fragmentation of history and the cultural tearing.The Latin American magical realism literature has a writing concept of "nationality" and the sense of rational integration into the world culture with localized identity.The black literature in America has colonial factors in the process of its produce,a call of the national traditional culture,the reconstruction of national pride.They all presented the similar background,similar goals and similar content with Taiwan's "root-seeking" novels,they are the external influencing factors of the birth of it.The second part mainly expounds the loss of "root",that is,the internal reason of "root-seeking".The "root-losing generation" faces the geographical dilemma of "the mainland comes to Taiwan" or "from Taiwan to theUnited States",the spiritual desperation that can't come back to their home meanwhile can't integrate into American society,as well as the cultural predicament of the decline of traditional Chinese culture in the face of heterogeneous society.Therefore,it urgently needs to seek spiritual support.The third part mainly discusses the search of "root",that is,the connotation of "root".First is to find the root of "identity",that is the confirmation of "identity" to improve "who I am" for individual.The second is to find the root of "culture",that is the soul of national culture deeply embedded in the blood of Chinese people.The third is to find the root of "literature",that is to return to the traditional themes and artistic conception after the using of modern techniques.The fourth is to find the root of "life",that is to find the idealized life attitude of characters."Seek root of life" is also the special point that differ Bai Xianyong's "root-seeking" consciousness from other writers in Taiwan and mainland China.The fourth part mainly discusses the return of "root",that is to return to the "mother mainland China" as its physical hometown,and the "cultural mainland China" as its spiritual homestead.In addition,after the waver of "back to the root",the author takes the subversion of "old root" and the remodeling of "new root" as the solution to the complex paradox of "seeking" and "returning" : From dissociation to anti-dissociation,to break the "root-seeking" in the process,emphasizing a kind of localization and integration.The fifth part mainly summarizes the development process and the positive significance from "root-losing" to "root-seeking" to "root-returning" and finally to "root-taking" of Taiwan's "root-seeking" novels which represented by Bai Xianyong.It is rooted in the breeding of the maternal cultural field,and ultimately acts on the expansion of the living space of literature.
