Eugene Nida is a famous American translator. The theory of functional equivalence proposed by him occupies an important position in the field of translation and plays an important role in the development of Chinese translation work and translation career. The theory advocates focusing on the meaning and spirit of the source text, not adhering to formal equivalence, and reproducing the original text as much as possible. As Nida’s core translation theory, functional equivalence theory is one of the first translation theories introduced into China.Functional equivalence theory has a profound influence on translation studies of various literary types in China.Folding Beijing,as one of the important works of modern Chinese science fiction, won the 74 th World Science Fiction Hugo Award in 2016.Hao Jingfang,as the first Chinese female writer to win the Hugo Award,is loved by readers for her works with beautiful and implicit language, rich and beautiful words, and clever combination of science fiction plots and cultural connotations. In Folding Beijing, she boldly fantasizes about the future of Beijing, vividly describing three scenes of spatial transformation, integrating a large number of language and cultural connotations.Since the award, many scholars have studied it from various angles and achieved a lot of achievements, but there is still a lot of room for research on Japanese translation.By reading Folding Beijing and its Japanese translation, the author finds that the functional equivalence theory is suitable for the translation of Folding Beijing,a soft science fiction. Therefore, starting from the theory of functional equivalence, this paper takes the original text of Hao Jingfang’s Folding in Beijing and the Japanese translation translated by Shangzai Nakahara as the research object.Firstly, through the method of literature combing,it summarizes the literature on the theory of functional equivalence and the research on the translation of Folding in Beijing to build a framework for this paper.Secondly, the case analysis method is used to analyze from the four aspects of vocabulary, syntax, text and style, dig out the cases that reflect functional equivalence in the translation, summarize the translation methods used by translators, and select some cases that do not conform to the theory of functional equivalence for analysis and discussion.By studying the Japanese translation of Folding Beijing,I hope to improve my theoretical level and practical ability of translation and provide some reference for other translators.
