A Report On E-C Translation Of Slow Violence And The Environmentalism Of The Poor

The material of this translation practice comes from the American scholar Rob Nixon's work,Slow Violence and the Environmentalism of the Poor,which is an important academic work in the field of environmental criticism.The author chooses the first and second chapter of this academic work as the material of this translation practice,on the basis of which the author writes the translation practice report.Although more and more western works have been translated to Chinese,there are relatively few studies on the translation of academic works.With high professionalism and logicality,academic works are mainly used to express writers' academic theories and opinions in a certain field.In an academic work,the writer prefers to use precise words and a large number of long and complicated sentences which constitute main difficulties in translation as well.Before translating this practice material,the author borrows Christiane Nord's text analysis model,from both extratextual factors(including the author or sender of the text,the intention of the sender,the audience of the text,the medium or channels of the text communication,time and place of text production and reception,communicative motive)and intratextual factors(including the subject matter of the text,text content or information,the knowledge presuppositions,the composition of the text,the characteristics of lexica,syntactic structures),to analyze the source text.Through source-text analysis,the author can fully learn about the linguistic features,expressive functions,and translation difficulties of the text.Based on the results of analysis,the author then explores the translation strategies and methods.In this process,the author concludes that the difficulties on lexical level mainly focus on the translation of unfamiliar usage of familiar words and terminologies,while the difficulties on syntactic level mainly focus on parentheses translation and the translation of long and complicated sentences.Referring to relevant articles,the author puts forth corresponding translation strategies and methods.For the translation of unfamiliar usage of familiar word,the author consults detailed explanation in the dictionary and analyzes collocation and context of word;for the translation of terminology,the author adopts the translation method of consulting parallel texts and data resources,and literal translation and listing original terminology.As for the translation of parenthesis,the author takes strategy of reversing.As for the long and complicated sentences,the author adopts two translation strategies: keeping the structure of original sentence and splitting the structure of original sentence.
