Note-taking,as an important tool and step for consecutive interpreting,has an impact on intepreting quality.Impromptu speech is widely used in conferences,and its linguistic features bring no small challenges to interpreters.Although it sees increasing focus,current researches combining impromptu speech interpreting and note-taking look mainly at strategies rather than note-taking's influence on interpreting quality.This thesis applies empirical study to discuss the influence of note-taking on the quality of impromptu speech.Gile proposes that if interpreters focus too much on note-taking,analyzing and memory will be left less effort,which brings negative influences on the interpreting quality.The thesis takes note-taking as a variable to see the quality differences of interpretation produced by interpreters with and without note-taking while they interpret.Subjects are divided into two groups to interpret the same impromptu speech,one group with note-taking and the other do not.The thesis sees the positive and negative influences of the note-taking on aspects included in quality assessment.The subjects' self-assessment is also includedThe study finds that for impromptu speeches,note-taking will have a negative impact on processing source language materials,but the impact is not absolute.On information fidelity,note-taking helps to improve the integrity of secondary information,but it is easy to have a negative impact on main information and structure of meanings.On language accuracy,note-taking is likely to have a negative impact on the use of clauses and the integration of meanings,and may also result in unnecessary misinterpretations.Self-assessment reviews that with low information density,the key to quality is listening and processing.Relying on the notes can lead to insufficient understanding and excessive note-taking.The influence of note-taking on the quality includes positive and negative sides.It is the active processing and listening that effectively improve the quality.In teaching and practicing,consecutive interpreting without note-taking can be applied to enhance capability of active-listening and processing.
