This translation practice report is based on the short fiction The Exchange by Australian poet and writer Glen Phillips. The short fiction tells a series of stories about an unmarried female lecturer who finally decided to change her life and go to teach in China. The Exchange are concise in plot, exquisite in structure and contain profound philosophy of life.Under the guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory, the translator has completed the translation practice of The Exchange, and summarized the difficulties and the translation skills encountered in the translation process. This translation practice report is divided into four parts. The first part introduces the background of translation task, the linguistic features of short fiction and the literature review of translation. The second part elaborates on the selection of translation theory, the preparation of translation tools, the Formulation and Implementation Translation Schedule and the Proofreading. The third part is a case study, which is the core content of this translation practice report and summarizes the difficulties and solutions encountered in the translation of The Exchange.Based on Nida's Functional Equivalence Principle, the translator adopts Conversion,Amplification,Inversion and Syntactic Linearity both at lexical and sentential level. The fourth part is a reflection and summary of the whole translation process, and puts forward the translator's inadequacies in the process of translation and suggestions for improvement. It is hoped that this paper can provide some references for Australian literary translators.
