Liao ZhaiZhi Yi is the representative work of PuSongling,a writer in Qing Dynasty,and also the peak of classical short stories of ancient China.In his works,PuSongling depicted many aspects of the late feudal society,which can be regarded as a genre painting with a huge variety of contents.And a series of characters created by the author became the most vivid and expressive details in the painting.Among the characters displayed in the works,the male immortals are less concerned by the researchers.However,they also contain rich thoughts and feelings from the author,thus they are worth our discussion and study.This paper takes the male immortals as the research object,focusing on the analysis of their types;the author's shaping techniques and the literary functions of the characters.The paper is divided into four parts:In the first part,it would explain the significance and value of the topic,and briefly expounds the current academic research conditions,meanwhile pointing out the research methods and innovation of this paper.In the second part,it would classify the male immortals in the works and analyze them from the positive and negative images.In the third part,to analyze the shaping techniques which be used in the male immortals,mainly from the imagination,language expression and the art of sarcasm.In the fourth part,it would discuss the function of male immortals in the works,including the ideological theme and artistic features of the works.Among them,the performance of ideological themes is mainly discussed in terms of exposing the dark bureaucracy and criticizing the imperial examination.In terms of characteristics,it mainly discusses two aspects: promoting the development of the plot and achieving a defamiliarization effect in the story.
