The original text of this translation practice is from the work of the Irish writer---William Trevor, and the author translates the first four sections of his novella Reading Turgenev, about 16,000 words. The original text mainly tells the story of an Irish country girl about her family, love and marriage.Fiction translation is a kind of literary translation. The material selected this time are compact and coherent, and the language is simple and unobtrusive, and its plot is delicate and close to life,so the translator should pay attention to the reader's feelings, maximize the original text information and reproduce the original style. Therefore, the translation practice report is based on Eugene Nida's functional equivalence theory to improve translation quality as well as analyze and summarize the translation practice. This report is divided into five parts, including introduction, analysis of the original text and functional equivalence theory, translation process, case analysis and conclusions. The report is based on the functional equivalence theory. From the perspective of translations of simple words, dialogue, idiom and character characterization, the translation skills of Reading Turgenev are studied. This paper explores and analyzes the translation methods and strategies applicable to English novels, such as the free translation of simple vocabulary, conversion of words and the sentence reorganization. It aims to use theory to guide practice and apply translation strategies to practice. The translation practice report can provide some reference for future related translations.
