On The English Translation Of The Biography Insight Under The Functional Equivalence Theory

As a common form of literature,a biography mainly records some important historical facts and certain historic figures."Being true to the life" and "literal creation" are the basic requirements for a good biography,and even some age-old biographies could be of great value to the historians and people fond of history.Therefore,under the guidance of Functional Equivalence,this author translates a chapter of Insight,a bestseller in 2013,in order to probe into relevant translation strategies and skills about Chinese biography,and to help popularize Chinese biographies in the world.Nida's Functional Equivalence places an emphasis on adaptations of grammar,lexicon and cultural references to achieve a close and natural equivalence in the target text and ultimately bring to the target readers a response which is approximately the same as that of the source readers.That's just the key to the good translation of a biography.Accordingly,the report explores the translation of the biography Insight at the lexical level,sentential level and stylistic level,and puts forward some translation strategies.At the lexical level,translation strategies such as literal translation,a combination of literal translation and free translation are applied;at the sentential level,translation skills including amplification,omission,and conversion are adopted;at the stylistic level,the issue of accurately reproducing the connotation of the source text is dealt with.It is hoped that the report of the translation project can offer some valuable reference for those who are interested in the Chinese history and who are dedicated to translating biographies.
