Many researchers have done studies in the addition of Xu Zhongjie, who translates more than 500 poems in Chinese and only 300 poems are published, including 100 Chinese Ci poems and 200 Chinese Tang poems. In those published ones, the 100 Chinese Ci poems are quite unique with massive additions in words, rhyme and meanings, but these are not studied in the previous studies completely. What elements are added in Xu Zhongjie's poetry translation? What are the goals for addition? These questions set up as the starting points and key points of this thesis. What is addition? In the author's opinion, the addition has two layers of meanings: the first means to add some new rhyme and logical relations, which haven't exist in the original poems ever;the second refers to add some words and phrases missing in the original but being containing in the meaning. After the great efforts, the author draws about 100 additions in Xu Zhongjie's Ci poems by the means of description and comparison with the source texts and the target texts. Not only that, the author analyzes the current 100 poems with the aid of statistics and summarizes the additions in Xu Zhongjie's Chinese Ci poems.Although there are 100 poems in the book 100 Chinese Ci Poems in English Verse, the additions in it can be classified into three types: phonetic addition, formal addition and semantic addition. The phonetic addition mainly refers to the addition of ending rhyme;the formal addition primarily researches the addition of logical conjunctions;the semantic additions can be divided into three categories: firstly, the addition to the emotional description;secondly, the addition to the scenery description;thirdly, the addition by means of annotation method. The phonetic addition in Xu Zhongjie's poetry translation is represented by the rhyme, containing the addition of couplet rhyme, quatrain rhyme and combination rhyme, which aims to make the rhyme fluent.Xu Zhongjie adjusts the sentence order or adds the person in order to make the translation rhyme as the original text that is easy for readers to understand the poem;the formal addition manly discusses the addition of logical conjunctions, making the translation more in line with English reading habits and ways of thinking;the semantic additions contain three aspects: addition to emotional description, addition to scenery description and addition by means of annotations. In the process of translation,Xu Zhongjie presents the meaning comprehensively by means of the addition method.Due to the short Chinese poetry with rich meanings, there are many implicit meanings hidden in the original poems, the descriptions to the emotions and scenery help the foreign readers to grasp the poetry more comprehensively. What's more,in terms of the semantic addition, the annotation method is used to explain the geographical terms, character names, traditional Chinese festivals and other special terms in the poetry,in order to let readers understand the poetry deeply. This thesis reveals that the translator has specific purposes for the addition of the original poem.Xu Zhongjie attempts to achieve three goals with regard to the addition: 1.to keep the rhyme of the poetry harmony and logical conjunctions coherently;2.to promote the integration of Chinese and English,in order to improve the acceptability of the target text among target readers;3.to keep the image of the original poetry. In conclusion, the author sets up a series of principles of addition, containing phonetic addition, formal addition and semantic addition, which are especially applicable for the poetry.Furthermore, the annotations of the geographical terms, character names, traditional Chinese festivals and other special terms in the poetry are regarded as a part of addition in this thesis. All of these above additional elements are beneficial for the future researchers to analyze the addition in the source texts and the target texts, promote translators' analyzing abilities in cross-cultural communication so as to handle the different parts of cultures properly and upgrade consciously the acceptability of translated texts among target readers, which promote the dissemination of the Chinese poetry.
