A Report On The Translation Of The Gardener And The Carpenter(Chapter2-3)

China has always been a country that values education of children.Parents are regarded as the first teacher of the children.Then How to establish a parent-child relationship between parents and children is especially important.In consideration of the education situation,the author translated excerpts from the second and the third chapter of The Gardner and the Carpenter written by Alison Gopnik and the translation report was completed based on this translation practice.The Gardener and the Carpenter,on the basis of the latest research in evolutionary biology,developmental psychology,and cognitive science,reveals the truth about parent-child relationships in contrast to the wrong parenting of mainstream culture,including books,television,and newspapers.The author Alison Gopnik uses the metaphor of the gardener and the carpenter to propose how to be a parent from the law of the child’s growth in this book.This book discusses what kind of parent do you want to be,a "parent like gardener or a carpenter.The book focuses on the relationship between parents and children.The two chapters excerpted in this report describe the evolution of the child’s childhood and the evolution of love.Since the text function of the translated text is mainly the "referential function class" text in Nord’s four text types,whose purpose is to provide the reader with text information and change the reader’s cognitive state.Therefore,Nord’s "function plus loyalty" theory has a strong applicability to the translation of this text.Combining with Nord’s "function plus loyalty" theory,translator needs to be responsible for the reader,but also takes the author of the source text into the consideration so as to make the translation convey the author’s true intention of the source text and enable the reader of the target language understand the source text,achieving the principle of “loyalty”.Translator conducts case studies on lexical and sentential level to explore translation method.The translation report is divided into four parts.The first chapter introduces the translation task.The second chapter introduces the process of translation.The chapter three is case analysis.In light of Nord’s translation theory of "function plus loyalty",the translator analyzes 25 examples from lexical and sentential level to illustrate the feasible translation method.Finally,the forth chapter analyzes the problems emerged in this translation practice and puts forward some possible solutions,which provide helpful suggestions for the future translation work.
