English course is the basic compulsory course for the secondary vocational school students.As the basic unit of English language,the English vocabulary's importance in English learning is self-evident.However,it is not easy for secondary vocational students to learn and memorize English vocabulary,and most teachers nowadays adopt the traditional vocabulary teaching methods which are quite monotonous and boring.The teaching effect is not satisfactory,and the students' vocabulary learning and mastery situation are not optimistic in secondary vocational schools.Faced with this situation,it is necessary and of practical significance to apply the perceptual learning styles theory to the English vocabulary teaching practice in secondary vocational schools.With the current teaching concept shifts from “teacher-centered” to“student-centered”,more and more educators and researchers have paid attention to the individual differences of language learners.Perceptual learning styles theory focuses on the individual differences of learners,which argues that the learners use one or more perceptual channels to gain and memorize the knowledge.In this study,the theory of perceptual learning styles was applied to the English vocabulary teaching in the secondary vocational school by adopting Reid's(1984)model,whose purpose is to find the distribution of students' perceptual learning style preferences and verify whether the English vocabulary teaching based on the students' perceptual learning styles can help them learn and memorize English vocabulary.In this study,the following three questions were focused on:1)What is the current English vocabulary learning situation of the secondary vocational school students?2)What is the distribution of the secondary vocational school students' perceptual learning style preferences?3)Can the English vocabulary teaching methods based on perceptual learning styles help secondary vocational students learn and memorize English vocabulary?And what's its implication and effect on English vocabulary teaching in secondary vocational schools?This research was conducted in a secondary vocational school of Guangzhou city,Guangdong province,whose school name is Guangdong Huawen Aviation Art Vocational School.It has taken the students of two classes from Grade 1 as research subjects,and the questionnaires,vocabulary tests,teaching experiment as well as the interview have been adopted as the research instruments to collect data and information.The author has adopted different vocabulary teaching methods in the two classes,the teaching methods based on students' perceptual learning styles were adopted in experimental class,while the traditional teaching methods were adopted in control class,and finally the SPSS20.0 has been used to analyze the data and discuss the results,which have showed that: 1)the secondary vocational school students' English vocabulary learning is not optimistic,their learning means and methods are relatively single,and the effect of their vocabulary learning and memory is non-ideal;2)most of the students have multiple perceptual learning style preferences,the most preferred is kinesthetic learning style,while the least preferred is group learning style;3)the English vocabulary teaching methods based on the perceptual learning styles theory can help the secondary vocational students learn and memorize English words.If the teacher adopts diversified English vocabulary teaching methods and strategies according to the students' individual differences and learning style preferences,their learning interest and enthusiasm would be greatly improved,and thus the English vocabulary teaching could be more effective.Through this research,the effectiveness of the application of perceptual learning styles theory in the English vocabulary teaching in secondary vocational schools has been confirmed,and the new methods and ways for secondary vocational school students to learn and memorize English vocabulary have been found.Besides,some new suggestions and implications on English vocabulary teaching have also been provided.
